Is the phone plugged into the wall?

This sounds silly, but many times we are called out to work on a phone with no dial tone and no one had thought to crawl under the desk and make sure it is still plugged in.

Is it plugged into the correct jack?

In most businesses there are at least two jacks per work station. One is usually dedicated for data networking and the other is for voice (usually labeled d for data and v for voice, ex. v001). Be careful when swapping jacks because plugging a digital phone into a fax or modem line can cause serious damage to the telephone.
